Bobby Womack His Life & his Music Beyond Across 110th Street, By Ali Jordana Maltz
I am going to go into a little of Bobby Womacks life. First off he was born March 4th 1944 in cleavland Ohio.
Bobby was born into a musical family, his father was a gospel man and he played gutair, he was very known.
Also Bobby Womack has brothers named Cecil, Friendly, Harry and Curtis . The four of them were a child hood act
named the Womack Brothers. In the 1950’s Bobby Womack and his brothers were picked up By Sam Cooke, and the four
of them formed a group called the Valentinos, under Sam Cookes label Sar’s Records. They did the up in till 1964
in till Sam Cookes unexpected death. Sam Cooke was murdered. Bobby at the age of 21 was a gutairists
as well as a Singer and began to be susscessiful on his on being Solo, and also working
with many of the great ones who are very famous soul artists that most of you know.
Bobby is also known for having great influence on many of the great Rock bands that are still popular
today, like the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix (who will live on through his music) and lots more.
Even though All Across the Watch Tower is Originally Bob Dylan’s Song Bobby is famous for it
too, and later on Jimi Hendrix. The other Hit that you might all know from the Rolling Stones, would be
It’s All Over Now, was originally Bobby Womacks Song which he performed with his brothers, and they received
great royalties for that. In 1965 after Sam Cookes Death, about 3 months later Bobby Womack Married Barbara
Cambell (Sam Cooke Widow) which that marriage ended in 1970. From the years on 1964-1967 Bobby Womack
was not having the greatest of Susscess in his Solo career, in till he started to record for American, and
began to sing a bunch of classic ( which we call sampling today) What Is This” (his first chart hit), “It’s Gonna Rain”
and “More Than I Can Stand. Which I have to say more then I can stand is my favorite song of all time, especially
the live 11 minutes preacher version. In the 1970’s Bobby Womack moved over to United Artist Label, and released
his album communication, Lookin’ for a Love (a remake of his 1962 Valentinos single), Across 110th Street,
Woman’s Gotta Have It, You’re Welcome, Stop on By,and the masterful Daylight. Bobby Womack also
remastered another song by Sam Cooke, Nobody Want’s You When Your Down and Out, All these Song are also
my favorite. Bobby is well known for not only writting songs, but doing cover songs too.
Bobby Womack has a gift, he not only sings like a G-d, but his gutair and song acts makes his live acts one of
the most famous, well known acts of all time. He is a true Soul Man, and a true Master mind. Bobby Womack
isn’t just a memory of the past or a one hit wonder he contuines to perform today, and still releasing albums
today. He isn’t just known for Across 110th Street, which was used for American Gangster, which I forgot to
mention is Originally a very famous movie from 1972 which Bobby Womack & JJ Johnson did the soundtrack
for. The film starred Yafat Koto & Anthony Quinn. Across 110th Street is my favorite movie of all time, and when
I tell you how sick the soundtrack is, it is unbelivible, its a must hear for your self. The film is a must see as well
It takes place in Harlem Ny, and has to do with the Mob, and the black gangsters from that time.
it’s a very contraversial, racial, and a little gory cause there is lots of murder and death. Three Black
Men that were middle aged, and struggling (ex cons) trying to get by in a very different time, not like today.
They decide to rob the Mob, while the Black Gangster, and the white mafia were in a harlem apartment
counting money. 3 hundred thousand to be exact. Well the 3 Black men decided to rob the money. They dressed
up as cops and ran Shot & killed 6 people + a cop on the way out. After the 3 thought they got away, the head mafia
sends his son in law to prove himself, and make an example of the 3 that had done this. Of course there is always one
fuck up in a crowd to give them selves away. Partying and spending money like water, he immadiately gets caught. Literally
with in one night the 3 get caught and brutally murdered. There is a lot more to the film that is going on through out all of this.
You have to imagine the police one crocked one one honest one who took the place of the crocked racist one .
A lot of Police beating innoicent people, cops on the pay roll, Mafia, Gangters, murder, and racism. It’s one of the ost realistic
films, upsetting, and sitting on the edge of you seat movie. Bobby Womack gained great susscess for that movie, and
in 1990’s Quintin Terrantino decided to use the song Across 110th Street. Which Pam Grier starred in. It was ironic
that Pam was doing the film cause Pam Grierr was a Back up singer for the valentinos (Bobby Womack & Brothers)
I am very greatful for Quintin’s release of Jackie Brown, cause if not for him I probably would not have my collection
of Blaxploitation films, that I do today, cause the films probably would not have been remastered and released on dvd.
To tell you the truth, since I bought my first Blaxploitation & kungfu film which I know have a collection of over 400 films
I would have nothing to watch, cause don’t watch anything else but those films. I am going to leave you some of Bobby
Womacks song here to download, so you can wittness what I am talking about, and maybe get an album of your own.
I truly feel that everyone should know the roots to Hip Hop music today and where it came from.
Bobby Womack is famous for all his genress Blues, Gospel, Rock, and Soul. Iam going to leave a coulple of songs
from each genre. I hope you all enjoy! Much Love to you All, and Happy Birthday Bobby Womack, You know I love you,
but you need to come back to NY to do a show, cause I am in need to hear you. Muah!! Ali Jordana Maltz aka SoulQueen!!!
